I have been sewing for 50 years. I started sewing because I wanted to make my own clothes, so I taught myself using Vogue patterns.
After having my family, I returned to education to study for an HNC in Fashion Design and Textiles. I was very pleased to have been nominated for the Edexcel Student of the Year Awards. I was delighted to be a Regional Winner and National Finalist.
Following on from my HNC, I worked in the fashion industry for several years. This included working in a small fashion house in London’s West End. My experience gained there gave me the knowledge and confidence to open my own bridal wear business. I designed and made bespoke wedding dresses and bridal party attire.
I have been a teacher of sewing skills since 2014. The classes are informal and friendly; everyone gets lots of individual attention and help with their projects, as there is a maximum of two students per session. I see this personal touch as very important. My students learn a great deal about how to use their own sewing machines, how to sew, tricks of the trade and how to achieve a professional fit and finish, whilst having fun.
I find sewing relaxing, creative and therapeutic. It keeps my mind active and is very rewarding. I sew for myself, my two daughters and my grand-daughter. I love colour, pattern and quirky designs. I understand how garments go together and I can draft my own patterns. I enjoy embellishing and adding detail to make each piece unique, yet still wearable.
