I have been sewing for over 50 years, when I used to make garments for my Sindy dolls (similar to Barbie dolls). Then, I stitched everything by hand and learned many invaluable lessons regarding design, style and fit. I took up sewing again a few years later, when I taught myself to make my own clothes using Vogue patterns.
Around 30 years ago, I attended college as a mature student, to study for an HNC in Fashion Design and Textiles. I gained a Distinction for every module and was nominated for the Edexcel Student of the Year Awards. I was delighted to be a Regional Winner and National Finalist.
Following on from my HNC, I worked in the fashion industry for several years. This included working in a small fashion house in London’s trendy West End. My experience gained there gave me the knowledge and confidence to open my own bridal wear business. Here I designed and made wedding dresses, bridesmaids’ dresses and mother-of-the-bride outfits.
I have been a teacher of sewing skills in Rayleigh since the summer of 2014, initially based at the Lovely Home shop, and now working from my home. The classes are informal and friendly. Everyone gets lots of individual attention and help with their projects, as there is a maximum of two students per session. I see this personal touch as very important. My students learn a great deal about how to use their own sewing machines, how to sew, tricks of the trade and how to achieve a professional fit and finish, whilst having fun.
I find sewing relaxing, creative and therapeutic. It keeps my mind active and is very rewarding. I sew for myself, my two daughters and my grand-daughter. I love colour, pattern and quirky designs. I understand how garments go together and I can draft my own patterns. I enjoy embellishing and adding detail to make each piece unique, yet still wearable.
